Janet B. Schrager's Approach
Rather than focusing solely on what's wrong, positive psychology asks: what helps people flourish? This question guides every evaluation and therapy session.
Character strengths: Identifying and building on what's already working.
Resilience & wellbeing: Skills for navigating difficulty with greater ease.
Collaborative goals: You set the direction; we work toward it together.
Clear communication: Reports and feedback delivered in plain, accessible language.
About
Janet B. Schrager, PhD is a licensed clinical psychologist with over four decades of experience helping individuals, couples, and families thrive. Dr. Schrager earned her BA from Clark University and her PhD in Psychology from the University of Connecticut. She completed her post-doctoral certification at Elmcrest Psychiatric Institute and is accredited in Mentor Coach Training and Certification in Positive Psychology, with specialized training in Collaborative Divorce.
Dr. Schrager began her private practice in 1985 in Storrs, Connecticut. In 1992, she relocated to West Hartford and became a member of Clinical Associates of Greater Hartford, a group of mental health professionals founded by Dr. James Black, M.D. Initially her practice focused on identifying children with learning disabilities and school adjustment issues, and providing therapy with adolescents and families.
Dr. Black encouraged her to expand her practice to work with families in conflict, negotiating divorce and post-divorce matters. She currently provides custody evaluations, reunification of children with parents, and co-parent counseling, while continuing to provide therapy for adolescents and adults.
In 1990, Dr. Schrager began working with students attending preparatory boarding and day schools. A significant part of her practice continues to address the needs of adolescents adjusting to boarding school and the process of individuation. She also works with adolescents attending public school and college. It is her forte to assist young adults in the process of individuation and getting launched into adulthood.
Throughout her career, Dr. Schrager has remained grounded in the principles of positive psychology — focusing on human strengths, resilience, and flourishing, with the goal of helping each person move toward their best self.
